Malware is defined as malicious software designed specifically to harm, exploit, or otherwise compromise IT systems. This encompasses a variety of harmful programs such as viruses, worms, ransomware, and spyware that can disrupt system functionality, steal sensitive information, or gain unauthorized access to networks. The primary characteristic of malware is its intention to inflict damage or carry out unlawful activities, which distinguishes it clearly from other types of software.

Software intended to improve system performance is focused on optimizing or enhancing the capabilities of a computer, rather than causing harm or exploitation. Similarly, software used for efficient data management aims to organize and handle data effectively, contributing positively to system operations. Lastly, hardware components that protect computer systems refer to physical devices designed to safeguard systems from threats, which is a contrasting concept to that of software classified as malware.
